 What is Law?

Law is a set of rules or guidelines that have been created by people in the government. These rules are enforced by the regulatory authorities, like police, within the state to ensure the safety and security of the common people.

There are different types of laws, and they vary from country to country but the common theme among every law is that it generates a sense of safety among people. Some examples include traffic laws, labour laws, property laws, etc., all of which guarantee the protection of the citizens. If anyone violates a rule of law, legal proceedings take place in the country’s judicial system to ensure justice where lawyers represent the concerned parties in front of the judge.

Prerequisites for a Law Degree

A bachelor’s law degree does not require any specific prerequisite. A most common misconception is that you need to have studied law subjects in high school if you are interested in a bachelor’s in law. When aiming for a bachelor’s degree in law, you can have intermediate or A level education with any major subjects. Globally, the top law universities usually consider your motivation statement as the most important part of your application.

The United States of America (USA), Japan, Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong are one of the few countries in the world that require a previous bachelor’s degree for admission to a law school. The USA, in addition, also requires Law School Admission Test (LSAT) scores as a prerequisite for the application process. So, if you want to study law abroad and aim for higher education in the United States, you need to have a good score in your LSAT exam and your bachelor’s degree. Other than the five aforementioned countries, a good motivation statement with reasonable grades in your intermediate / A levels will get you admission to any law school.

Types Of Law

If you want to study law abroad, different law universities provide different types of law courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The most common and well-known bachelor and master’s programs are Legum Baccalaureus / Bachelor of Law (LLB), Juris Doctor (JD), and Legum Magister / Master of Law (MS).

LLB – It is perhaps the most well-known bachelor’s law degree. It is offered by almost every law school and is a three to a four-year law degree. After completing LLB and passing the bar exam, one can directly practice law or pursue a Masters in Law (LLM) for a higher law degree.

JD – Juris Doctor, also known as jurisprudence doctor, is a bachelor’s degree offered by the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, and Hong Kong. Although it is a bachelor-level law degree, it has replaced the LLB program in the aforementioned countries, and admission in this law course requires a bachelor’s degree in any program as a prerequisite.

LLM – It is a master level degree of law and admission in this degree is obtained after completing a Bachelor of Law degree. LLM is usually chosen by lawyers who want to either study law further or are interested in carrying research studies.
